AquaStik Epoxy Putty from Two Little Fishies is designed specifically for attaching items in aquascaping. It is nontoxic and effectively bonds corals, live rock, gorgonians, plants, and more directly to each other or to glass surfaces. With its unique red color that matches coralline algae and a grey tone that blends well with live rock, it is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. After it has fully cured, you can drill, sand, or saw the putty as needed. AquaStik will adhere to a variety of materials including wood, concrete, ceramic, acrylic, metal, and fiberglass. It mixes in just one minute, hardens in 20 minutes, and fully cures in 24 hours. This product is suitable for use in marine and freshwater aquariums, ponds, paludariums, and even in habitats for reptiles and small animals.
Directions for Use
- Peel back the plastic wrapper enough to twist or cut off the required amount of AquaStik.
- To mix, knead the putty with your fingers for about one minute until you achieve a uniform color (if you have sensitive skin, feel free to wear gloves). Press and hold the mixed putty in place for 2 minutes.
- Apply the putty to the surface within 2 minutes of mixing. You will have about 5 minutes of working time. The mixed epoxy will not exhibit high bond strength initially, but it will harden after 20 minutes and completely cure in 24 hours.
- Store any unmixed portion back in the tube for later use.
Note: Using large quantities of the product may temporarily cause your protein skimmer to foam excessively. It is advisable to turn off the skimmer for 36 hours after application.
For creating more structural bonds, consider using plastic rods. Avoid cutting off excess epoxy, as this may weaken the attachment. You will notice that coralline algae will soon coat any exposed epoxy, and corals will also grow over it, forming an additional bond.
When attaching fragmented branches of Acropora and other stony corals, surround the base with epoxy and press it into a hole in the rock. You can use a toothpick or plastic rod inserted into the base for added support, especially for larger pieces or soft corals.
For Gorgonians, if there is a base, place epoxy underneath it and push the base into a deep depression in the rock, holding it in place by hand for 2 minutes. You may also use rubber bands, plastic cable ties, monofilament line, or a clamping device to secure larger pieces until the epoxy cures. Remove the clamp or cut the temporary bands after 24 hours. If the gorgonian lacks a base, clean about 1 inch of live tissue from the woody skeleton at the bottom of the stem. Use enough epoxy to hold the specimen firmly when inserted into a hole in the rock, pushing the excess epoxy down into the hole and around the stem for a secure fit. You can use plastic toothpick shims wedged into the hole with the epoxy to help secure particularly large specimens.
For freshwater planted aquariums and paludariums, AquaStik can be used to attach various plants such as Java Fern, Java Moss, Bolbitis, Riccia, Anubias species, and others to wood and rocks.
