Reef aquariums are intricate and often delicate ecosystems that rely on stability for success. Daily changes in carbon dioxide (CO2) levels from activities like normal breathing, pets, and cooking can influence the aquarium’s pH. The more CO2 that the skimmer pulls in, the more acidic the water becomes, which can lead to a drop in pH, unstable dKH levels, and significantly hinder coral calcification. Over time, this may stress corals and could even result in their loss. For proper development, corals thrive in a stable pH range of 8.1 to 8.4.
During the day, photosynthesis helps to stabilize the aquarium’s pH. However, at night, pH levels tend to drop as oxygen demand increases. This is particularly noticeable in autumn and winter when windows are often closed and rooms are less ventilated. Therefore, this is an ideal time to start using the AF Air Scrubber Medium to maintain a stable reef aquarium.
The AF Air Scrubber Medium is a white, dry pellet that fills the filter chamber tightly while allowing airflow. This design enables it to effectively absorb carbon dioxide. When used and replaced regularly, it ensures stable pH levels in the aquarium.
Our tests indicate that the AF Air Scrubber Medium can raise the pH by approximately 0.2 to 0.4 degrees and stabilize it within the range of 8.0 to 8.4. We suggest using the AF Air Scrubber Medium alongside the AF Air Scrubber filter to achieve optimal CO2 removal from the air drawn in by the skimmer. The color-changing medium gradually indicates when it needs to be replaced. We recommend replacing it before the color changes completely. The cartridge is designed for single use and cannot be regenerated or reused. Its saturation with carbon dioxide is indicated by the pellet color; when it turns purple, it means that it has absorbed CO2. Only original CO2 filter cartridges ensure uninterrupted operation and maximum efficiency.
For optimal and long-lasting filtration, it is advisable to use AF Air Scrubber Medium together with the dedicated AF Air Scrubber filter.
Important
- Aquaforest recommends replacing the media when it changes color or when your pH levels begin to drop.
- One package is a full AF Air Scrubber reactor refill.
- AF Air Scrubber Media can be used together with activated carbon.
- If the used media remains in the reactor for too long, it may change color again, but it will no longer be effective at removing CO2 from the air.
- When replacing the media, it is best to wear gloves and do so in a well-ventilated area.
