Theory Behind Protein Skimming

Protein skimming is a physical water treatment method that relies on a natural phenomenon often observed in daily life: the adhesion of surface-active substances to air-water interfaces. A simple example is when a drop of oil is placed on the surface of water, creating a thin film with a thickness of just one molecule. In the same way, surface-active compounds like proteins behave in water.

The EVO 501 skimmer uses air bubbles to create a large water surface where waste substances can adhere. These air bubbles are injected into the reaction chamber in such a way that they experience an extended contact time in a counter-current flow. As the bubbles rise, enriched with organic substances, they form a stable foam. This foam is then dehydrated and pushed into the collection cup, effectively removing organic wastes from the aquarium water before they enter the biological waste treatment cycle.

The skimmer’s venturi pump draws water from the aquarium or filter chamber and mixes it with air within the pump housing. The needle wheel cuts this water-air mixture into small air bubbles. These bubbles are pumped into the reaction chamber, where they attract organic substances. The resulting foam is collected in the foam cup, and the purified water exits the skimmer through an outlet, returning to the aquarium or filter sump via the discharge.
