Only aerobic autotrophs can perform bio-filtration within the nitrogen cycle, which means that not every type of bacteria will suffice. Due to their relatively slow growth rate, it can take around 6 to 8 weeks to establish bio-filtration in a new aquarium, as their population is quite low during this period.
