Hanna HI783 Magnesium pocket checker is suitable for reef aquariums
The Magnesium Checker® HC for seawater is a handy colorimeter that measures magnesium concentration through colorimetric analysis. This device was specifically designed for use in seawater aquariums and employs the Beer-Lambert principle to accurately determine magnesium levels. The measurement range of 1000 to 1800 ppm is perfect for reef aquariums that are home to fish or both fish and corals.
Magnesium is the third most prevalent ion in seawater, coming after sodium and chloride. Its significance lies in forming weak ion pairs with carbonate ions, which allows calcium and carbonate ions to be absorbed by corals and invertebrates. When magnesium levels are low, it can lead to unstable calcium and alkalinity levels. Symptoms of low magnesium include calcium precipitation as insoluble calcium carbonate and hindered growth and overall health of your aquatic inhabitants.
The CHECKER® HC mini photometers present a great alternative between basic chemical test kits and compact meters. These user-friendly photometers blend accuracy with affordability, featuring a large LCD and a single-button operation. Plus, the automatic switch-off function helps extend battery life.
Recommendations for Users
Before you start using this product, please ensure it is fully suitable for your specific application and the environment in which you intend to use it. Any alterations made by the user to the supplied equipment may impair the checker’s performance. For the safety of both you and the checker, avoid using or storing it in hazardous environments.
Tips for an Accurate Measurement
- Accurately measure liquids using a syringe by pulling up the plunger until the bottom seal reaches the desired volume mark. Avoid raising the liquid to the mark, as this may result in a false high volume. It is normal to have an air gap between the plunger and liquid. Refer to the image on the right for guidance.
- Always utilize clean, dry cuvettes and syringes/tips. Rinse them with deionized (RODI) water only; never use tank water. Ensure the cuvettes are dry before use to avoid dilution.
- Make sure the sample is free of any debris.
- When placing the cuvette into the checker, ensure it is dry on the outside and free from fingerprints, oil, and dirt.
- Thoroughly wipe the cuvette with the HI731318 microfiber cleaning cloth or any lint-free cloth prior to insertion.
- Avoid shaking the cuvette, as this can create bubbles that lead to higher readings. To achieve accurate measurements, gently swirl or tap the cuvette to eliminate bubbles.
- Do not allow the reacted sample to sit for too long after adding the reagent, as this will affect accuracy.
- Discard the sample immediately after taking the reading to prevent permanent staining of the glass.
- Keep the tips with their corresponding syringes during measurement, and clean the syringes and tips before storing them.
