K1 Media – 50 ltr
K1 Medium – 3 ltr
For reef tank applications, we recommend using K1 Micro instead of K1 Medium.
How it works
Maturing the K1 Media bio-media is essential because it fosters a delicate ecosystem that supports the bacteria involved in the nitrification process. K1 Media offers the maximum active surface area for bacteria to colonize, surpassing other types of static media. This process effectively removes harmful ammonia and nitrite from the water.
How it is different from other media
As K1 Media shifts within the filter, it displaces old, dead bacteria on the outside. This creates space for new, younger, and more active feeding bacteria to quickly establish themselves. Inside the media, there is a protected surface that allows bacterial colonies to naturally progress through their lifecycle—maturing, dying, and then contributing to the later stages of the nitrification cycle. K1 Media is designed to provide the ideal habitat for both young and mature beneficial bacterial colonies.
What is meant by self-cleaning?
Unlike foam, matting, or other static filtration media, K1 Media is engineered to move freely within your filter. The constant, dynamic movement caused by air from your pump enables the media to self-clean, eliminating the need for maintenance. This design allows the filter to achieve optimum effectiveness without the disruption of regular cleaning, thus preventing unnecessary loss of bacteria. Fifty liters of K1 media can manage up to 250 grams of food per day, while K3 can handle 225 grams per day. If you are retrofitting existing filters, K3 media is the most suitable choice due to its larger size and ease of control.
