Seachem Prime – 250ml
Product Description
Prime® is your go-to complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. It effectively removes chlorine, chloramine, and ammonia. Prime® converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that can be easily handled by your tank’s biofilter. You can use Prime® during tank cycling to help manage ammonia and nitrite toxicity. It also detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, making it easier for the biofilter to eliminate them. Additionally, Prime® neutralizes any heavy metals typically found in tap water. It promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat and is non-acidic, meaning it will not affect pH levels or overactivate skimmers. Remember to use it when starting up your tank or whenever you are adding or replacing water.
Why It Is Different
While many companies offer products that remove chlorine, none can match the quality, concentration, or effectiveness of Seachem’s flagship product: Prime®. It is the second most concentrated dechlorinator available, following our own aquavitro alpha™. A single 100 mL bottle can treat up to 1000 US gallons of tap water, effectively removing both chlorine and chloramines from municipal water supplies.
Prime® also includes a binder that renders ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate non-toxic. Understanding how these two functions work together is very important. All dechlorinators operate through a chemical process known as reduction. This process converts toxic dissolved chlorine gas (Cl2) into non-toxic chloride ions (Cl-). It also breaks the bonds between chlorine and nitrogen atoms in the chloramine molecule (NH2Cl), freeing the chlorine atoms and replacing them with hydrogen (H) to form ammonia (NH3). Many dechlorinators stop at this point, leaving you with toxic ammonia in your aquarium. Seachem takes the extra step by including an ammonia binder to detoxify any ammonia produced during this process.
Be cautious when selecting water conditioners. If your municipality includes chloramines in the water supply, a standard sodium thiosulfate dechlorinator will not suffice. Prime® encourages the natural production and restoration of the slime coat, rather than relying on artificial or non-native slime compounds. For reef enthusiasts, a great bonus is that Prime® will not overactivate protein skimmers.
Directions
Use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 200 L (50 gallons*) of new water. This dosage will effectively remove approximately 1 mg/L ammonia, 4 mg/L chloramine, or 5 mg/L chlorine. For smaller doses, each cap thread is roughly equivalent to 1 mL. You can add it directly to your aquarium, but it is recommended to mix it with new water first. If adding directly to the aquarium, base your dosage on the aquarium’s total volume. A sulfur odor is normal. For exceptionally high chloramine concentrations, you can safely use a double dose. In an emergency, to detoxify nitrite, you may use up to 5 times the normal dosage. If the temperature exceeds 30 °C (86 °F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, consider using a half dose.
