Seachem Prime – 500ml
Product Description
Prime® is a complete and concentrated conditioner suitable for both fresh and saltwater aquariums. It effectively removes chlorine, chloramine, and ammonia. Additionally, Prime® converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is easily processed by your tank’s biofilter. It is a great option to use during tank cycling, as it helps alleviate ammonia and nitrite toxicity. Furthermore, Prime® detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, enabling the biofilter to work more efficiently. It also detoxifies any heavy metals typically found in tap water. Another benefit is that Prime® promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat. This product is non-acidic, ensuring that it does not impact pH levels and will not overactivate skimmers. You can use it at the start-up of your tank and whenever you add or replace water.
Why It Is Different
While many companies offer products that remove chlorine, none can match the quality, concentration, or effectiveness of Seachem’s flagship product: Prime®. In fact, Prime® is the second most concentrated dechlorinator available, following our own aquavitro alpha™. A single 100 mL bottle can treat up to 1000 US gallons of tap water, efficiently removing both chlorine and chloramines from municipal water supplies.
Prime® also includes a binder that makes ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate non-toxic. It is essential to understand how these two functions work together. All dechlorinators function through a chemical process known as reduction, which converts toxic dissolved chlorine gas (Cl2) into safe chloride ions (Cl-). This process also breaks the bonds between chlorine and nitrogen in the chloramine molecule (NH2Cl), freeing the chlorine atoms and replacing them with hydrogen (H) to create ammonia (NH3).
Many dechlorinators stop at this point, leaving your aquarium with toxic ammonia. Seachem takes the additional step of including an ammonia binder to detoxify any ammonia produced during the reduction process. When purchasing water conditioners, it is important to be cautious. If your municipality uses chloramines in its water supply, a standard sodium thiosulfate dechlorinator will not suffice. Prime® encourages the natural production and restoration of the slime coat, rather than relying on artificial or non-native slime compounds. A bonus for reef hobbyists: Prime® will not overactivate protein skimmers.
Directions
For new water, use 1 capful (5 mL) for each 200 L (50 gallons) to remove approximately 1 mg/L ammonia, 4 mg/L chloramine, or 5 mg/L chlorine. For smaller doses, please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL. While Prime® can be added directly to the aquarium, it is better to add it to new water first. If you choose to add it directly, base the dose on your aquarium volume. A sulfur odor is normal with this product. For exceptionally high chloramine concentrations, you can safely use a double dose. In case of an emergency to detoxify nitrite, up to 5 times the normal dose may be used. If the temperature exceeds 30 °C (86 °F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, consider using a half dose.
