While silicon components are essential for life, they are only needed in small amounts. Unfortunately, many aquariums contain high levels of silicic acid, which can disrupt the ecosystem. In natural habitats that are not influenced by human activity, you will typically find low concentrations of silicic acid.

Silicic acid refers to all compounds based on SiO2NH2O. It often enters the aquarium through tap water or as a discharge from certain types of stones. When silicic acid is removed from the water via biological processes, it is usually replaced by the dissolution of the corresponding amount of SiO2 rocks.

High levels of silicic acid can lead to the unwanted growth of smear algae, which can cover surfaces like a carpet in colors ranging from brown and blue-green in fresh water to brown and red in saltwater. It is important to note that smear algae are not true algae; they are actually bacteria that coat plants, corals, and decorations. When silicic acid levels exceed 0.1 mg/l in either fresh or saltwater, negative effects, as described above, are likely to occur.

Aqua Connect Silicarbon effectively binds silicic acid and silicates through a chemical adsorption process. This prevents them from dissolving back into the water. By removing the granulate from the system, you can safely eliminate the adsorbed SiO2. Additionally, Aqua Connect Silicarbon does not release any unwanted substances into the water, making it completely safe for use in both fresh and saltwater aquariums.
